BUYING A CAR IN 2010

(WITHOUT HAVING HEADACHES IN 2011)

SPECIFIC VEHICLE RECOMMENDATIONS - Large SUVs:

These are luxury trucks. Based on the full size pickup trucks from the same manufacturers. Lots of weight, space, and towing capability, but car like ride. Gas mileage is what you would expect of a full size truck that is weighed down with extra glass, seats, and power luxury items (as in, not good). All are V8 engines and can be had with rear or 4 wheel drive (great for snow covered states), but do not take them off road. You might scratch the paint. Most require regular gas.

Toyota Sequoia - Much larger than before. Based on the Tundra pickup truck. Smoothest and most reliable of this group of vehicles. Resale value is also the best. Seating for 7. V8 with rear or 4 wheel drive and three trim levels for different size budgets. Tows up to 10,000 lb.

2 - 15 to 19 mpg on regular or 17 to 21 on premium fuel
5 - Comfortable for 5 or 6 on trips, more around town
5 - Best there is.  More reliable as a used car than many new cars
5 - Cavernous
5 - Can tow over 5000 lb - Horse trailers/Travel trailers/big boats
4 - Has space and weight capacity for heavier items
2 - Can get out of its own way

Toyota Land Cruiser - Not the same vehicle as the Sequoia or the Tundra. Comes in one trim level (full luxury) with the biggest V8 and full time 4 wheel drive only. Very off road capable and very few options. As smooth and reliable as the Sequoia. Seating for 7. Tows 8,500 lb.

Ford Expedition - Seating for 7. Reliability is lower than the Toyota. Serious hauling and towing capacity. EL version is even larger. Cheaper to get than the Sequoia.
