BUYING A CAR IN 2010

(WITHOUT HAVING HEADACHES IN 2011)

SPECIFIC VEHICLE RECOMMENDATIONS - Large Luxury Cars:

These cars are ultra smooth, quiet as bank vaults, and so-so handling for the most part. They come with standard everything. They hold four large passengers comfortably, and five for short trips. Most are V8 and rear wheel drive. Premium gas required for most.

Lexus LS460 - Noted by a JD Power survey as tied for most reliable vehicle after 5 years of ownership. Surprisingly nimble for the size. Engine is quiet and smooth enough to pass for an electric motor. Everything on the car is top drawer. Best resale value in the class. Even has a self parking program. Long wheelbase version available for extended rear legroom. V8 or gas/electric hybrid versions, rear wheel drive. Premium gas.

4 - Comfortable for 4 on trips
5 - Best there is.  More reliable as a used car than many new cars
3 - Good trunk space
1 - Don't do it
1 - Not for hauling
3 - Has a decent chance of avoidance

Infiniti M37/M56 - Currently the largest Infiniti car until they bring back the Q45, but though smaller outside than the last Q45 was, but still has large car interior space. Even the V6 powered M37 has serious power and saves another $8K over the M56. 4 wheel drive optional on the M37. Premium gas.

Lincoln Town Car - Large and very spacious car, though not as large and spacious or as classic looking as the 1990s (square) Town Cars that were so popular. Although advertized as a six passenger car, sixth seat (middle, front) is totally useless, a thinly padded board with a seat belt. Driving experience (steering, braking, and handling) is vastly improved over older Town Cars. Surprisingly good reliability for an American car, but lower than competing Japanese cars. V8 (regular gas), rear wheel drive. Also available is a long version with more back seat room. Regular gas.
